The American Counseling Association

The American Counseling Association (ACA) is a not for profit organization educational education which aims at enhancing counseling profession. It is the largest of all professional associations which represent different counselors. ACA has 20 chartered divisions within itself which provide leadership and other resources for different specializations in counseling. American Counseling Association has four regions and 56 branches which cater to the needs of its members. The mission of ACA is to enhance the quality of life by promoting the development of professional counselors. When it was formed, the name of the association was American Personnel and Guidance Association (APGA) which was changed to American Association of Counseling and Development in 1983 and was changed to American Counseling Association in 1992*.

The headquarters of ACA are in Alexandria, Virginia, just outside Washington DC and the president of the association is Mr. Bradley T. Erford. Talking about the licensing and certification in ACA, Professional education program accreditation which reviews college or university level professional program in counseling or psychology, it is voluntary in nature. Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), the Council on Rehabilitation Education (CORE), or the American Psychological Association (APA) are professional bodies that evaluate professional programs**. The ultimate aim of this evaluation is to maintain a standard of quality of the courses set by the CHEA short for Council on Higher Education Accreditation which oversees all such professional bodies which accredit academic bodies.
